New Journal Article on Altering Wetting Properties of Titanium Alloy with Laser Peening

Congratulations to Xiaojun Shen (Coventry University) for publishing some of his PhD work in the Journal of Alloys and Compound. This work is entitled: Altering the wetting properties of orthopaedic titanium alloy (Ti–6Al–7Nb) using laser shock peening. The work is not only interdisciplinary, but also involves international (multi-institutional authors) from UK, India, China, and Iran contributing to the work in different ways to boost the quality of the research.

The highlights of the papers are as follows:

  • Compressive residual stress of −41 MPa to −516 MPa were formed on the Laser Shock Peened sub-surfaces;

  • By applying variable laser energy (3J, 5J & 7J) and overlap (33%, 50% & 67%), different surface morphology can be generated;

  • Increasing in overlay leads to a decrease in dynamic contact angle at the same laser energy;

  • Increasing laser energy has a negative correlation with contact angle at the same overlap.
